WINE BriefS new realities in Piedmont tinY-BUt-deterMined NUOVE REALTÀ GroUP SeeKS diStriBUtion hen six small wineries in Northern Italy’s Piedmont region band together to sell their wines, is it news? It is, if the wineries are focused on marketing, and if their winemakers are terroir- obsessed, like those in the Nuove Realtà (New Realities) group. These family-owned wineries are all about showcasing the different types of soil-driven flavors and aromas in the region’s wines—which tastes a lot better than it sounds. For instance, Caldera’s 2009 Ruché di Castagnole Monferrrato DOC (from limestone) is mildly floral, with red fruit and mild tannins, retaining a floral touch in its longish finish. Another red, La Fusina’s 2008 Dogliani DOCG, offers red currant flavors with a hint of violets (there’s more iron in this soil). Voghera’s 2006 Barbaresco DOCG, from mixed, sandy vineyards, tastes young and huge, looking for still more time to integrate its tannins, yet emanating violet florals. Manzone’s 2005 Barolo DOCG, from marbly clay and chalk fields across the river, shows its age with faded, orange-red edges, but presents striking, almost burnt flavors of flowers and fruit, continuing to open up in the glass over time. A white, Brjnda’s 2009 Roero Arneis DOCG, has an extremely flo- ral nose, with white flowers, pears and peaches in its rounded flavors, and a long finish with pear notes; the wine has low acidity from loose, sandy, yellow soil. And the Moscato d’Asti DOCG by La Bruciata, with grapes grown in a fossil-rich white soil, has moderate acidity, yet intense honey, marmalade, even musky florals. W Nuove Realtà wines share contempo- rary, branded packaging. Nuove Realtà has set up a central distribution system at the Voghera winery for export. The group is actively seeking importers and distributors in the U.S. —Becky Sue Epstein www.nuoverealta.com Healing Hearts Inspiring Souls Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort & Spa, Avila, CA Central Coast Wine Country February 16-18, 2011 Reduce Stress Balance Expectations Inspire Healthy Living Body • Mind • Heart • Soul Get to the core of mental blocks and barriers, transform your inner saboteur into your inner ally.
