editor’s note What’s your outlook on 2011? By RANDI ALTMAN EDITOR-IN-CHIEF raltman@postmagazine.com look ahead to the next. In addition to our SWOTs (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) that run on the pages of Post, we will be hosting many more on www.postmagazine.com. Below I asked just a few other industry pros to comment on what they expect to see in 2011. Dave Waller, co-founder of Brickyard VFX in W Boston, says,“I think that the race to cheaper and faster at the expense of quality for visual effects has been an ongoing trend that continues to move forward. But, I’m starting to see that bud- gets have bounced back for commercial VFX re- placing ‘cheaper’ with ‘quality’ and am also sensing an increase in corporations spending more money on their advertising efforts, which is a great thing for companies like Brickyard. “The movement to unionize film VFX artists is also prominent at the moment — I have mixed feelings given the amount of VFX work already sent overseas,” he concludes. “This is an exciting time to be a filmmaker. I think we’ll see image capture systems and post workflows become even more unified than they are now. In the big picture, digital image capture POST SCRIPT Sound Lounge expands W hile many studios have behaved cautiously during the shaky economy, NYC’s Sound Lounge is expanding its facility and services, hop- ing to become more of a full-service audio post house and further grow its long-form business. Four years ago Sound Lounge, which had By MARC LOFTUS SENIOR EDITOR mloftus@postmagazine.com mainly focused on audio for commercials, branched into long-form audio post. That expan- sion continued recently, as the studio added an additional 5,000+ square feet of space, which adds 10 rooms that can be flexibly configured for editorial or other needs, and also includes the addition of a dedicated ADR stage. “Sound Lounge has always been about conservative expansion,” says partner/sound designer Marshall Grupp.“We have strategically, over the years, built new divisions, and the final piece, I thought, would be entertainment — film and television.” Sound Lounge brought in lead mixer Tony Volante and executive producer Travis Call to drive the long-form business. Both were former- ly with Soundtrack.“I had met up with Tony, who I had worked with on some movies and 2 Post • December 2010 elcome, once again, to our year-end trends issue where we ask the indus- try to reflect on the past year and systems are still very young,” says commercial direc- tor Fred Raimondi of BRW-USA.“I think you’ll see more shops — production companies specifically — that shoot, edit and finish. The barrier to entry is much lower than it was even five years ago. Not so much for big VFX jobs, but for story/talent/charac- ter-driven stuff. It’s not only feasible, it’s cost effec- tive to do much of the work in-house. I believe we’re entering the DIY phase of filmmaking — the age of the independent contractor. Which goes back to what I’ve always held to be the truth: It’s not about machines, it’s about talent.” Bill Roberts, COO of LA-based LaserPacific, says,“The accelerating proliferation of digital cap- ture in all forms of content and at all production budget levels will continue to challenge post companies to provide efficient end-to-end work- flow solutions while maintaining creative flexibil- ity and quality.” He also sees “continued penetration of on-set post services and their integration into end-to- end workflows” and believes that to succeed in both areas, you need to provide “efficient, cost ef- fective solutions that do not diminish finishing flex- ibility and quality.” What’s your outlook for 2011? Secondly, the room has to be a certain size just to accommodate the space between the performer and the microphone.” Call says the long-form division will cater to both film and TV.The studio has seen success with the indie film Frozen River, and is currently working on Blue Valentine. “My idea was to make it a home for indepen- dent filmmakers,” says Call.“It’s a market that no one else is actively going after.ADR was the last piece of the puzzle.” www.postmagazine.com opt 2 (publishing), opt 1 (subscriptions) REPRINTS Reprints (781) 255-0625 • (818) 291-1153 LA SALES office: 620 West Elk Avenue, Glendale, California 91204 (800) 280-6446 WILLIAM R.
