RESOURCES NSTA/Vernier Software & Technology: Vernier Technology Awards National Science Teachers Association Vernier Technology Awards recognize the innovative use of data collection technology using a computer, graphing calculator, or handheld in the science classroom. Winners will receive $1,000 cash, $1,000 towards expenses to attend the NSTA National Conference, and $1,000 in Vernier products. Teachers of science grades K-College are eligible to apply. Apply online by November 30, 2013 at www.nsta.org. Opportunities for Students We the Students Scholarship Contest The 2013 We the Students Scholarship Contest is accepting applications through December 6. To participate in the contest, high school students will answer three questions around the ideas of the Constitution and the role of government. One $4,000 prize will be awarded for first place, one $2,000 prize for second place, and one $1,000 prize for third place. Two $500 prizes will be awarded for honorable mentions. In an effort to support your hard work, the Institute has set up the contest with teacher prizes. When your students win, you win! The teachers of each winner will receive prize money, $500 for first place, $300 for second place, $100 for third place, and $50 each for honorable mention winner. C-SPAN StudentCam 2014 StudentCam is C-SPAN's annual national video documentary competition that encourages students to think critically about issues that affect our communities and our nation. StudentCam's theme for 2014 is: "A Message to the U.S. Congress: What's the most important issue the U.S. Congress should consider in 2014?" Winners will receive $5,000, plus $750 to spend on digital video equipment for his/her school. Students in grades 6-12, individually or in teams, are eligible. Apply online by January 20, 2014 at www.studentcam.org. Toshiba/NSTA: ExploraVision Awards All inventions and innovations result from creative thinking and problem-solving. The Toshiba/National Science Teachers Association ExploraVision Awards Program encourages kids to create and explore a vision of future technology by combining their imaginations Winter.13advo.indd 36 with the tools of science. K-12 students are eligible for this award of $10,000 bond per student on winning team. Apply online by January 30, 2014 at www.exploravision.org. National Federation of Independent Business: Young Entrepreneur Awards The NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards program raises awareness among the nation's youth of the critical role that private enterprise and entrepreneurship play in the building of America. Winners will receive $10,000 in tuition assistance. High school seniors are eligible to apply. Apply online by December 18, 2013 at www.nfib.com/yef/yef-programs/ young-entrepreneur-awards. VSP: Sight for Students Sight for Students is a VSP charity that provides free vision exams and glasses to low-income, uninsured children. The program operates nationally through a network of community partners who identify children in need and VSP network doctors who provide the eye care services. Parents and guardians interested in seeking assistance through the Sight for Students program must work through VSP's established network of community partners. VSP does not issue gift certificates directly to the public. There are five basic qualifications a child must meet in order to receive a Sight for Students gift certificate: family income is no more than 200% of federal poverty level; child is not enrolled in Medicaid or other vision insurance; child is 18 years old or younger and has not graduated from high school; child or parent is a U.S. citizen or legal immigrant with a social security number; and child has not used the Sight for Students program during the past 12 months.
