Discover: Pathway to Financial Success Grant Discover is investing up to $10 million in financial education, and any high school can apply for a grant toward a financial education curriculum. Applying schools must have implemented or be looking to implement a financial education curriculum; have a measurement tool planned or in place to assess participation in and comprehension of the financial education curriculum; and agree to share overall results of the measurement tool's pre- and post-curriculum testing with Discover upon the program's completion to assess what worked and what didn't. Apply online at www. pathwaytofinancialsuccess.org/get-a-grant. 2014 National Council for History Education Conference: New Frontiers The 2014 National Council for History Education Conference will be held March 20 – 22, 2014, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The conference will be held at the University of New Mexico and a block of rooms at the Sheraton Albuquerque Uptown have been set aside for conference attendees; however, rooms sell out fast. Innovation Generation: Christopher Columbus Awards The Christopher Columbus Awards is a national, community-based STEM competition for middle school students and teachers looking to make a difference in their community. Working in teams, students identify a problem in the community and apply the scientific method to create an innovative solution. Schools (grades 6-8) and community groups are eligible for this $25,000 grant. Apply online by February 3, 2014 at www.christophercolumbusawards.com. NSTA: Distinguished Service to Science Education Award The National Science Teachers Association Distinguished Service to Science Education Award recognizes those who, through active leadership and scholarly endeavor over a significant period of time, have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of education in the sciences and science Winter.13advo.indd 35 teaching. Winners will receive formal citation, three nights' hotel accommodation, and up to $500 towards expenses to attend the NSTA National Conference, April 3-6, 2014, in Boston. NSTA members who have shown long-term dedication to science education are eligible. Apply online by November 30, 2013 at www.nsta.org/about/awards.aspx#distservice. RESOURCES NSTA: Making a Difference Award The Drug, Chemical & Associated Technologies Association "Making a Difference" Award recognizes excellence in a science program developed and implemented by middle-level science teachers, grades 6-8. Entries must show innovative and effective teaching strategies combined with a science program that has influenced students to explore and investigate science and its application to global problems. Winners will receive $2,500 to be used to enhance or expand the winning science program; the winning school's lead science teacher and principal will be awarded coach airfare and two nights' hotel accommodation to attend NSTA's National Conference. Apply online by November 30, 2013 at www.nsta.org. NSTA: Wendell G. Mohling Outstanding Aerospace Educator Award The Wendell G. Mohling Outstanding Aerospace Educator Award recognizes excellence in the field of aerospace education. The recipient will be honored during the Awards Banquet and the Aerospace Educators Luncheon at the annual NSTA Conference. Winners will receive $3,000; plus $2,000 in expenses to attend NSTA's National Conference. Apply online by November 30, 2013 at www.nsta.org. NSTA: Awards for Excellence in Inquiry-based Science Teaching The Delta Education/Frey-Neo/CPO Science Awards for Excellence in Inquiry-based Science Teaching will recognize and honor three fulltime K-12 teachers of science who successfully use inquiry-based science to enhance teaching and learning in their classroom.
