transform—and restore—contemporary environments into period settings. On TOPGUN: Maverick, Fantasia helped coordinate locations for one of the most ambitious productions ever attempted across complex military sectors by balancing bold aerial photography with strict environmental regulations in Washington's North Cascades. "Tom Cruise wanted to put a 30-foot Technocrane on the ground to capture the jets screaming by 50 feet above the camera, which he could not under any circumstance do," he recalls. "How was I going to break the news to the guy nobody ever said 'no' to? He peppered me with questions, and I met each one with an answer, including reciting chapter and verse from the Wilderness Act of 1964. The room was silent except for our voices. I figured it was my last day on the film, I'd had a good run, and someone would be on a plane that day to replace me." Ultimately, the aerial coordinator suggested a creative workaround that delivered a spectacular sequence while protecting the wilderness, and the moment became a defining demonstration of Fantasia's ability to balance creative ambition, environmental stewardship, and diplomacy under pressure. The Influence Fantasia's influence extends miles beyond the horizons he's brought to the screen: as a founding member of the Location Managers Guild International, Fantasia helped build the organization into a vital industry advocate for location professionals. He served nine years on the Guild's Board of Directors—including four years as President—and this year, he has been elected to serve another term on the Board. "I'm most proud of the outreach work the LMGI has done over the years," Fantasia says. "From 'Coffee Tuesdays' Zoom calls during the pandemic, in-person and virtual Fam Tours, our Compass magazine to panels and discussions at film festivals, colleges, and other forums around the world. Topics run the gamut from the mission of the LMGI, location scouting tips to new technology, the benefits of film tourism, burnout, working in extreme weather, and many more. We are continually educating the next generation of location professionals." "Mike has done so much for our profession and our members over the course of his career," says longtime colleague Location Manager Doug Dresser/LMGI. "He has managed to stay creative and passionate about our craft and has done so with grace and humor. He has helped the careers of many new members, is always generous with his time, and has been a tireless advocate for our profession." "I saw firsthand what makes Mike so exceptional," adds Nancy Wong/LMGI, fellow three-time COLA winner and location professional who collaborated with Mike on Ant- Man and TOPGUN: Maverick. "He sets the tone for the whole department—he inspires confidence and builds trust within his team. He has an ability to creatively solve problems, make tough decisions, and keep morale high. Mike's passion, smarts, and humor make him not only a great boss but a dear friend." The Wrap Having navigated an industry in constant evolution, Fantasia offers upcoming filmmakers a candid blueprint for building a lasting career. "The business is changing at a rapid rate: technology, incentives, fewer productions, lower budgets. Get whatever entry level job you can and do it well. Take good notes, treat people with respect but don't be a doormat, try to be patient and flexible, don't let the changes eat at you because if you do, you won't survive." Having left his mark on some of cinema's most indelible images, Fantasia continues to view his surrounding reality through a camera's lens. "I seem to look at the world as a big location now," he reflects. "Almost everywhere I go I think, 'That'd be a great storefront for a period film,' 'What a great landscape for a driving shot.' I think about the beauty of a place and how it can be used to set the tone for a scene in a movie. I think about how filming in a forgotten place could possibly transform it after filming, much like has happened in a number of small towns I've filmed in over the years." In recognition for an extraordinary body of work, the Location Managers Guild International is honored to present Mike Fantasia with the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award. His vision and inspired leadership will be remembered long after the credits roll. "Mike Fantasia is one of those rare cases where the work doesn't just speak, it keeps teaching the rest of us how to do the job better. This award is our way of putting a name to what everyone in this industry has known about Mike for a long time." WE BUILD WORLDS One Location at a Time –LMGI President Danny Finn
