Working with writers, producers, and directors, EMA also encourages authentic "green messaging" through subtle storytelling, engaging audiences in environmental issues in thoughtful, compelling ways—from characters driving electric vehicles, for instance—or by incorporating environmental imagery into the set dressing. One of EMA's most influential initiatives is the EMA Green Seal, introduced in 2003. Projects that meet established criteria are recognized with the label. "We created the standard for sustainable production by creating concrete practices and protocols to dramatically increase sustainability on film and TV productions," explains Levin. "Since then, studios have sustainability departments and green stewards for productions. Our goal is that production is always environmentally responsible. "The EMA Green Seal appears in the credits so audiences can see that the film or television project they've watched adhered to responsible practices. We hope that visibility encourages people to bring sustainability into their own lives and businesses." Its landmark 25-year collaboration with Toyota and Lexus helped introduce the Toyota Prius to Hollywood and mainstream audiences, with Toyota crediting EMA for a significant increase in sales and Fortune magazine famously describing the organization as the automaker's "secret weapon." EMA hosts the annual Environmental Media Awards, rolling out its iconic "green carpet" to honor productions, artists, and industry leaders whose work advances sustainability both behind the scenes and on screen. By bringing together filmmakers, craftspeople, executives, scientists and advocates, EMA continues to foster collaboration in pursuit of a healthier planet. "Location professionals play a critical role in shaping how stories come to life, and their commitment to protecting the places where we film is essential to building a more sustainable future for our industry," says Levin. "This recognition reflects the collective efforts of the creators, crews, and partners who continue to push for meaningful change. We are proud to stand alongside LMGI in advancing more responsible production practices around the world." As the entertainment landscape continues to evolve, EMA remains focused on expanding eco-responsible initiatives, supporting emerging voices through programs such as the EMA Content Fund, and fostering collaboration through events like the EMA IMPACT Summit. Through 36 years of advocacy, education, innovation, and action, the EMA has ensured that the stories we tell today do not come at the expense of the world we hope to leave for tomorrow. For its enduring commitment to protecting the places where stories are told— while inspiring positive environmental practice across the entertainment industry— the Location Managers Guild International proudly honors the Environmental Media Association and CEO Debbie Levin with the 2026 LMGI Humanitarian Award. "The EMA is one of the most influential organizations advancing environmental sustainability in television and filmmaking today. It has helped change the way the entertainment industry operates, and as international production reaches an all-time high, its impact is truly global. The LMGI is deeply honored to celebrate the EMA—and Debbie Levin's leadership—for its vital work protecting our industry, our planet, and our future." –LMGI Awards Chair Nancy Haecker WE BUILD WORLDS One Location at a Time
