40 M PS E . O R G CREATIVE VISION Ghost of Yōtei has such a strong musical identity. From the beginning, what were the main creative goals for how music should support the player's journey? ➤ From the beginning, our goal was for the music to help establish a strong sense of place and identity. Ghost of Yōtei is set in Ezo—present-day Hokkaido—in the early 1600s, so it was important that the score felt rooted in that world. Traditional Japanese instruments such as Peter Scaturro MPSE Score Producer shamisen, shakuhachi, koto, and taiko became an essential part of the musical language, and we also incorporated Ainu musical traditions and instruments to reflect the cultural history of the region. The music needed to immediately communicate to the player that they were experiencing a specific place, time, and culture. At the same time, we wanted the music to support the emotional core of Atsu's journey. On the surface, Ghost of Yōtei is a revenge story. Atsu is driven by anger, loss, and a determination to confront the people responsible for the destruction of her family. The score needed to reflect that intensity and resolve. But equally important was revealing the vulnerability beneath that anger. As the story unfolds, players discover that there is much more to Atsu than her quest for revenge, and we wanted the music to help communicate additional aspects of her character. A third goal was to create a musical identity that felt distinctive within the genre. We were interested in the intersection of traditional Japanese musical colors and the cinematic language of the American Western. That combination felt like a natural fit for the game's themes of isolation, frontier exploration, and personal vengeance. By blending those influences, we were able to create a score that felt familiar in some ways, while still giving Ghost of Yōtei its own unique musical voice. How early did the music team become involved in shaping the musical experience of the game, and how did that early involvement influence the final result?
