Creative directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell, along with audio director Brad Meyer, had settled on a revenge story centered on Atsu, and they had a clear sense of the emotional themes they wanted the player to experience. One of the most valuable things they shared with us early on was music by Hako Yamasaki, a Japanese folk singer-songwriter whose work became an important creative touchstone for the project. There is a loneliness and emotional honesty in her music that immediately resonated with Atsu's journey. The sparse arrangements and intimate performances helped us understand that beneath the revenge narrative was a deeply personal story about loss, isolation, and perseverance. Having that creative direction so early gave us a strong foundation for exploration. Working closely with composer Toma Otowa, we began developing a series of musical concepts and demos exploring different ways to express those themes. Some of the early folk-inspired qualities remained throughout the process, but as development continued, another idea began to emerge: combining traditional Japanese musical instruments and performance practices with the cinematic language of the American Western. That hybrid approach ultimately became one of the defining characteristics of the score. It allowed us to support the game's setting and cultural influences while also reinforcing themes of frontier exploration and vengeance.
