8 S P R I N G 2 0 2 6 I C A S Q U A R T E R L Y EVENTS WRAP-UP b y C a r o l T h o m a s The Art and Craft of Disney Animation Sound On Wednesday, December 3, members of the Cinema Audio Society, along with members of both AES and MPSE, were invited to the Burny Mattinson Theater at Disney Animation Studios for an evening titled "The Art and Craft of Disney Animation Sound," presented by former CAS President David Fluhr. David started the evening with a brief resume of his education in music, giving us insight into how he got into post- production sound by including some of his most recognizable credits. He discussed the practical, real-world education gained from his mentors and their commitment to "paying it forward"—something David has done throughout his career. He was very emphatic about the critical importance of nurturing the next generation of filmmakers. David guided the audience through screenings of recent and classic Disney films, breaking down the re-recording processes employed universally and then going in depth by explaining the incremental approaches involved. He showcased the remarkable achievements behind Disney's animated films by highlighting how sound design, music, and voice performance bring stories to life. He celebrated the innovative techniques Disney sound artists developed to create expressive characters, immersive worlds, and emotionally powerful moments, from synchronized sound in early animation to richly layered modern soundscapes. "The Art and Craft of Disney Animation Sound" demonstrated how sound is not merely a technical element, but a vital storytelling tool that has helped define Disney's animation legacy. The event was a great way to spend a few hours learning from one of the industry's most celebrated animation-focused re-recording mixers.
