38 • THE ARTISAN SPRING 2026 KEY CONSIDERATIONS INCLUDED: • Functionality during the fight scenes. • Period-accurate consistency with Christy Martin's real-life looks. • Subtle changes that reflected her journey through physical abuse and emotional highs and lows. • Collaboration with Ashleigh Chavis, our Department Head Make-up, as well as costume and of course, with the director. Rather than "perfect" hair, my goal was believability. The imperfect hair styles were more of an intentional storytelling tool. To accurately track Christy Martin through her life, I designed and maintained seven wigs: Each one was specific to different time frames in Christy's life. The wig that challenged me the most was the braided wig. I tried a couple of different ways to do it and the one that worked the best was having her hair braided under the wig, so the braids matched up to the braids on the wig. We left the outer edges of her hair out so I could braid it into the edge of the wig. More challenges were the continuity issues through the fight scenes and keeping up with the right amount of sweat and match the disheveled hair. I permed each one of the wigs to match Christy's look but also to be true to that particular time period. The process I used to do this was a perm called a "transpose" perm. It looks the most natural and is easier to maintain with all the water and product that is needed to maintain a "sweaty" appearance. The curl pattern for this type of perm avoids an intentional curl pattern and that is why it looks so natural and it looks good wet. This was a process I used on all the wigs even if they were not meant to be curly or wavy, I was able to control the hair better this way even if it was controlled chaos, there was a reason. Texture was important to the look too. Christy Martin came from a specific part of the country and a difficult economic reality; her hair needed to reflect both these. A salon finish was not the goal in this movie; the goal was to make her look like a boxer who maintained her own look. In addition to Christy's transformation, I was also responsible for Jim Martin's wig Ben Foster as Jim Martin
