LOCAL706.ORG • 39 which presented its own challenges. Justin Stafford made a beautiful custom piece for Ben and I basically mutilated it with a razor and scissors to achieve the "comb-over" look and added jojoba oil to it to keep it separated over his "balding" spot. This particular wig required constant problem-solving in that I had cut the top of it out for the balding aspect of it. Both Christy and Ben's wigs could not appear to be overly secured—they needed to move. • We had several fight setups and different eras but one of the most interesting ones was when our "Don King" character came in the movie. Our actor, Chad Coleman, who sounded a whole lot like Don King, and we needed to make him look as much like him as we could. I added a piece on the top of his head after securing the top with a partial fracture wrap. I sewed the white hair into the piece and added enough textured hair to the piece to blend the colors together. Rather than perfection, my goal on this one was credibility to make the hair a believable Don King. • The goal for the hair in Christy was to support the story rather than distract from it. Some of the scenes were tough to shoot but because the actors were so committed to their roles, it made it much easier. Each fight sequence required some planning to make sure everyone's hair looked the way it should for a real boxing scene no matter if it's the boxers themselves or the audience watching and everyone working in the ring. Taking care of the cast was basically aging everyone by 20 years and this was done subtly rather than with bold moves. We went with softer colors and changing the lengths and textures of the hair. Ashleigh did very subtle changes with pieces she used on our actors to show passage of time. The movie Christy reinforced the idea that hair design is not a decoration when done right; it should disappear into the performance, hopefully we came close. Designing for this movie was a great experience and honoring a woman like Christy Martin was pretty fabulous, too. I would like to thank my crew and the make-up department, including Diamond McCall (hair), Heather Hawkins (hair), JC Davis (hair), Ashleigh Chavis (Department Head Hair), Megan Deputy (key make-up). Conor McCullagh (make-up). •
