ROBERT REDFORD, a cinematic icon and the 1995 SAG Life Achievement Award recipient, died Sept. 16, 2025, at the age of 89. The charismatic Redford, who starred in scores of films, including All the President's Men, The Natural, The Way We Were and The Sting, made an equally impactful mark as a director, producer and activist. His directorial debut, Ordinary People, earned him an Academy Award for Best Director. As an activist, Redford championed environmentalist causes and was a member of SAG-AFTRA's Green Council. He was also a powerful advocate for Native American and LGBTQ rights. His love of independent film led him to found the Sundance Film Festival, as well as the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Channel, all named for the character he played in his breakthrough 1969 film, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, in which he starred opposite Paul Newman, who would go on to be a 1985 SAG Life Achievement honoree. In accepting the 32nd Life Achievement Award, Redford expressed his appreciation to his fellow union members. "The biggest reason I am honored is that I think probably the most meaningful award, at least to me, is an award where you're voted on or celebrated by your peers," he said.
