Pinizzotto 12/11/2024 BELVA DAVIS, a pioneering broadcaster, civil rights champion, union leader and the 39th recipient of the union's George Heller Memorial Award, died Sept. 24 at the age of 92. In 1966, Davis became the first African American woman to become a television reporter on the U.S. West Coast, reporting famous events, including the Berkeley student protests, the birth of the Black Panthers and the Peoples Temple cult that ended in mass suicides and murder at Jonestown. Davis spent the majority of her career covering politics and fighting for racial and gender equality. Her outstanding contributions awarded her eight local Emmys from the San Francisco/Northern California chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, as well as honors from the International Women's Media Foundation and the National Association of Black Journalists. Davis joined both SAG and AFTRA in 1966 and was an active member of her unions, serving intermittently on the AFTRA National Board from 1979–2007 and as a vice president from 1984–2007, in addition to committee work.
