2 WINTER 2026 EDITOR'S LETTER EDITOR'S LETTER Dear Readers, When it comes to heroes on the big screen, no one is more well known than Superman. From comic book to silver screen, audiences everywhere recognize the ultimate symbol of honesty, fairness, and compassion. When Costumers talk about Superman, we aren't only talking about the original superhero and his colleagues; we're talking about the technical details required to create this icon. The vast range of expertise and troubleshooting that goes into developing the characters is explained in interviews with five Local 705 Costume Makers who were integral to creating the look of the costumes in the 2025 feature film. For almost 30 years, Muto-Lile, one of our esteemed signatory costume houses, has been serving our community from their custom shop in Larchmont Village. This shop wasn't their first rodeo, as they got their start on Rodeo Drive. These two extraordinary women were destined to establish the successful business that they are today and find their way into Local 705 (Full disclosure: I am a bit biased as I worked my way into 705 under their employment). Follow their story through Hollywood and learn about their wide variety of entertainment clients over their 43 years in business. MavenCra Studios, a newer signatory to Local 705, specializes in building character costumes. You may be impressed with this shop's ability to construct original pieces in a time crunch by a curated team of creatives. In this issue, we highlight some longtime members. Revisit the making of the classic Christmas story, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) with Ruben Calderon, a 30-year Local 705 member and Men's Finished Costumer. Then read about Bryan Birge's career as a 705 Costumer which spans 34 years. His start at Western Costumes in the summer of 1990 launched his career and established his home in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel Live! has had some ups and downs this year, but in the costume department, the sewing machines kept running. This show travels from Hollywood Boulevard to New York City, and you might be surprised at the amount of costume work that goes into a "talk show." There's a reason why JKL! has been on the air for more than 20 years, and the countless creative challenges the costume team faces are just one of the reasons they keep coming back season aer season.
