MOTIONPICTUREC O S T U M E R S .O R G 27 Superman, the biggest problem with him was, does he have trunks? Does he not have trunks? Trunks, no trunks. Trunks, no trunks. I think there was an interview with James Gunn where he said it was the night before, and that is absolutely the truth. It was the day before they started filming. The fabric was all custom printed and we were prey sure up until toward the end that it was going to be no shorts. And then it became shorts. So, the challenge with it was all the paern pieces had been developed for that specific costume, and the print was for that was without the shorts. And so then, the shorts being added kind of became a very problematic thing at the last minute. But as far as the prototypes, because the fabric did keep changing, we went through several different options for fabrics. They really didn't want it to feel like any original Superman. As far as looking like a leotard and tights. So, we tried everything. We had a lot of different fabrics with different texture, different weight, different stretches that still had to have a certain amount of stretch to be as form fiing as we could get without it being a leotard. We probably went through about a couple dozen different prototypes on that one. In the end, we stuck with one of the old basics, which was just a euro jersey, because we tried all that, and we tried a lot of different things; we just couldn't get it to do what we wanted to do. Couldn't get the color we wanted. We couldn't get it to a stretch that we really liked. It looked really cool once it was printed, but then it made so much noise, we were like, all the sound people are going to kill us if we give them that costume. What I do in a suit like that one is, it's still kind of a draping technique, but I cover my dress form because we had a dress form that was his body scan, just a lile bit smaller than him. I covered it in saran wrap, and covered it with scotch tape, and I drew all my style lines that are in the illustration, and then I cut it all apart. And then most of my seaming can go on the lines where there's a printed line to hide some of the seaming, so you get a really nice shape when you're done, it goes on the stand and it fits perfectly. GS: I made the cape for Krypto, and I worked on the collar with Dominick DeRasmo. We also partnered/ collaborated on Superman's belts, Ultraman, Supergirl, and belts for the Justice Gang. But Superman looks really good, but then it looks so simple.
