where we shot the final sequence of Oslo, August 31st. I was stunned. Fifteen years later, we were returning to the very place where my career had begun, only now with a story that would trace the house's own life through the decades. It was a full-circle moment in every sense—past and present converging, for both the characters and for us. The character at the center of the story, Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård), was born in the house in the 1950s to his mother, Karin, who took her own life there a few years later. Gustav moved to Sweden with his father and didn't return until 1986, when he started a family with therapist Sissel. Their daughters, Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), were born in the 1980s and '90s. The marriage ended; Gustav moved away and built a career as an acclaimed film director, peaking in the late 1990s, while the girls grew up with their single mother, who later suffered from depression and dementia.
