9 - 1 - 1 | P E R S P E C T I V E 2 7 the line, intricate and fantastic—but by the end of the episode, it had to explode! After eight seasons, our stages were completely filled up. So, we sacrificed our beautiful hospital set. We cut it, extended it, repainted it, rewired it and obviously, redressed it in a snap, and there it was in all its splendor! For few days, it worked just like that…and then the call came—it had to be ready to shoot the explosion aftermath. Oh, and by the way, that shoots tomorrow…you're welcome! Overnight, the crew distressed it and repainted it and we were ready to roll for a 7 AM call. Everyone was happy. (Well, maybe not everyone.) But we made it through episode fourteen. Episodes 15, 16, 17? Pieces of cake. The production just needed to deal with a funeral for one of the main characters, a massive procession through Downtown LA. Simple stuff, mainly for the location department. (Yeah right!) In another rescue, well…just a massive building on fire with flames coming out of the firefighters' hoses (you'll have to watch the episode to understand why.) To seal the season, in episode 18, a huge explosion in a basement causes a high-rise to collapse. Just another day at the office. To solve that final task, the location department found a building that we could interact with. On a lot right beside it, we built an enormous exterior set to establish the collapsed building. With the Set Designer's skills and the support of visual effects, a high-rise building was born in Downtown LA. The interior pieces of that same sequence were built, once again, on Stage 9, in our former hospital/bio lab/exploded bio lab… and now, an industrial laundry room…that will explode as well. D. & E.
