to air while the nation grappled post-pandemic,
we were careful to imagine a place for healing
and a place one might want to return to.
Two large soundstages filled up quickly with
expansive hallways for walk-and-talks and
the many rooms required for a fully realized
cardiology department. Space was tight, and I
found myself designing changeover strategies
that were not so different from the world-
building techniques you might use in science
fiction. Hospitals, like spaceships (at least the
ones in my mind), require easy modular and
technological adaptability.
This concept of rapid transformation wasn't
new to me. I had honed it on game shows,
variety shows and scripted series like Criminal
Minds, where a flexible 100-foot x 100-
foot footprint allowed for week-to-week
transformations of different police stations
using modular pieces. That experience, along
with my theatrical background, shaped my
approach to Good Sam, and by the time the
show wrapped, others could see the set had
plenty of life left in it.
