Island of Hawaii: Ka'u Stronghold Meeting Hut Ka'u is the land of the black lava desert. In Chief of War, it is also the center of the geopolitical conflict in which King Kalaniopu'u, father of Keoua and uncle of Kamehameha, sparked an intense rivalry by splitting the power between the two men. The Ka'u meeting hut is the biggest structure built on the show, and it signified the king's importance and all the geopolitical issues at stake. The initial plan was to build it in an exterior location or backlot, but as winter was approaching quickly, the weather dictated that it be built on stage. This became a big challenge for the VFX team, that had to extend the set and generate the environment. As with a lot of the other bigger iconic huts designed for the show, the design team favored structures with open gable ends, which gave us a very graphic structure and a nice sense of depth. We really pushed it with the Ka'u meeting hut, setting up/erecting a double-crossed gable structure to create a massive interior-exterior space that could provide the scale and openness needed, given this had to shoot on stage. Temple of Refuge/Bone Tower In the slice of Hawaiian history depicted in the series, what took place in Oahu was about Kahekili's conquest of the island.
