LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2025 • 43 One Hunderd Years of Solitude The Walking Dead: "Daryl Dixon: The Book of Carol" HOTEL PORTOFINO A glamorous hotel hidden away from Mussolini's rising fascist movement on the Italian Riviera during the 1920s is seamlessly replicated in Croatia. The stunning northern coastline and architectural beauty of the city of Rijeka captures the sun- drenched ambience and opulence of the era. Casinos, bistros, bustling promenades and beaches for wealthy travelers and demanding guests are found in the capital city of Zagreb and small towns and villages that dot the countryside. Intrigue, schemes and secrets swirl as privileged guests and working staff are caught between their public personas and private struggles during a time of social and political upheaval. ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE The magic realism of Gabriel García Márquez's iconic novel is brought to life by filming across a tapestry of Colombian locations, each chosen to evoke the novel's blend of fantasy and reality and to root the constructed fictional town of Macondo as it grows and expands in authentic Colombian landscapes. Here, generations of one family navigate love, rejection, madness, war and the inescapability of their fate as their free-thinking community is threatened by government forces. The lush banana plantations, expansive marshes, the winding Magdalena River, the misty Sierra Nevada mountains, vibrant villages and dramatic weather of Colombia's Caribbean coast all ground the fantastical events in authentic Colombian culture and history where ghosts, omens and miracles are an accepted part of daily life. THE WALKING DEAD: "Daryl Dixon: The Book of Carol" Don't let the zombies keep you from checking out a story about family and companionship as two survivors trek through France looking for a way home. From the grandeur of the Eiffel Tower to the claustrophobic Chunnel and the wilds of Provence, they bear witness to the devastation of a once beautiful country. The UNESCO World Heritage site Mont Saint-Michel is reimagined as "The Nest," a remote, magical medieval stronghold surrounded by water that provides a haven for a community of survivors. The destruction of the Louvre after a massive attack, with its iconic pyramid and world-famous art, epitomizes the collapse of civilization. At the abandoned Hippodrome, a plane landing and subsequent confrontation bring together all the main characters and threads of the story in a single, high-stakes set piece. The French Alps also double as Greenland and parts of the French countryside stand in for scenes set in the eastern U.S. French landmarks place the story in a tangible reality that describes the chaos and decay caused by the zombie apocalypse, heightening both the beauty and the tragedy of the world the characters now inhabit.
