eason 1 of Chief of War recounts the unification of the Hawaiian Islands under the Native Hawai'i war chief, Ka'iana. Notably, this production stands as the first large-budget endeavor to authentically portray 18th-century Hawai'i with meticulous historical accuracy. The Season 1 Costume Department's immense undertaking spanned 2½ years, encompassing more than 135 shoot days and involving more than 130 dedicated crew members. Guiding us with tireless inspiration was Costume Designer Caroline Eselin, who, alongside her co-pilot, Assistant Costume Designer Marina Reti, oversaw the project from inception to completion. My own involvement was for 12 months, including two months in New Zealand to hand over the reins to my talented counterpart, Alice Baker. Our Paern Maker, Heather Vandergriff, pioneered the construction methods for all Native Hawaiian garments, including the iconic feather capes.
