A couple of years ago, an executive from a major company that deals in multi-channel audio spoke to the audio production faculty at MTSU, the university where I teach. A few minutes into one section of her presentation, I saw perplexed looks on the faces of my colleagues—all of whom were music specialists. The exec's use of the term "localization" just didn't make contextual sense in their immersive audio-focused minds. As the sole sound-for-picture faculty member, I raised my hand. "You're referring to 'localization' as in language dubbing, right?" A collective "Oh!" hit the faces of my colleagues as the exec nodded her head in affirmation. Localization and perspective. Two words that can mean different things based on context. Our audio world has a number of these. (Compression, anyone?) "Localization" can refer to "localizing" (placing) a sound source within the sound field—be it headphones, speakers, or a venue. It can also refer to language "localization" where dialogue is dubbed with language that is "local" to an area—a vital part of distribution economics. "Perspective" can be someone's point of view or, in the mixing world, positioning or treating sounds relative to the camera being the viewers' "eyes"—or not. In this issue of CAS Quarterly, we have an article about localization (the language type), "ADR and Perspective," brought to us by Brandon Schuster CAS—which also discusses perspective (the mixing kind), and an article titled "Mixing with Perspective" (the mixing kind) from Daniel Vasquez V. CAS. In his article, "Finding Success Through a Sound System," CAS Associate Sam Casas, using a little word play, isn't talking about having a great pair of playback speakers but having "a solid approach" to find success (though great speakers may help). In the "straightforward title" section, Chris Welcker CAS shares some challenges (and approaches) in his article, "Navigating the Noise: Production Sound for an IMAX Film," while Blas Kisi´c CAS asks, "Should We Have a Director of Sound?" Bruce Black provides suggestions for those in between permanent living quarters in his article, "Good, Fast, Cheap: Acoustic Treatment Ideas for a Temporary Space." Looking for recorder options while on a recent high track count project, CAS Associate Ryan Pedersen took the new WildTrax software from Halter Technical for a test drive and shares his thoughts. With the industry slowdown affecting many, Gregory Vilfranc CAS MPSE discusses, "Side Hustles and Shame." Finally, be sure to see what your colleagues are up to in the "Been There Done That" and "The Lighter Side" sections. Thanks for taking the time to review this issue. If an article makes you think of a friend or colleague, send a link to the online version of the Quarterly, available on the CAS website. Have something to share? We'd love to hear from you! Email us at CASQuarterly@CinemaAudioSociety.org. Finally, I'd like to congratulate all our members who worked on Emmy-nominated shows or who themselves have received a nomination. Best of luck to you in September! Matt Foglia CAS F R O M T H E E D I T O R
