CAMERA TECHNOLOGY www.postmagazine.com 20 POST MAY/JUNE 2025 BLACKMAGIC DESIGN REVEALS PYXIS 12K FREMONT, CA — At the April NAB Show in Las Vegas, Blackmagic Design introduced Pyxis 12K, a new digital film camera featuring a 12K RGBW sen- sor. The new model features the same sensor as the Ursa Cine 12K LF, with 16 stops of dynamic range, along with dual CFexpress media recorders, 10G Ethernet and Blackmagic Cloud global sync, all in a customizable body. Pyxis 11K will come in three models, allowing users to choose between L-Mount, PL or Locking EF lens mounts. The camera will be available in July for $4,995 and will offer multiple mounting points and accessory side plates, making it easy to configure for a range of applications. Pyxis' compact body is made from precision CNC machined aerospace aluminum, making it lightweight yet very strong. It can be easily mounted to a crane, gimbal or drones. In addition to the multiple 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch thread mounts on the top and bottom of the body, Pyxis has a range of side plates that further extend the ability to mount handles, microphones or SSDs. Its large, full-frame sensor has a native resolution of 6048x4032 or 12288x8040, making it almost three times larger than a Super 35 sensor. Additionally, Pyxis allows users to shoot up to 112fps. Using the full area of the sensor gives users an open gate 3:2 image, which also lets them reframe their shots in post production. The large sensor also lets cinematographers work in true 6:5 anamorphic without cropping, making widescreen cinematic images more detailed and in higher resolution than previously possible. Shooters can even use the classic Super 35-sized window on the sensor to create an instant close up version of their shot that fits seamlessly with open-gate footage. The L-Mount model works with the latest full-frame lenses from Leica, Panasonic and Sigma, but can also accommodate lens adapters, allowing users to take advantage of a wide variety of new and vintage lenses. The EF mod- el lets DPs use high quality photographic lenses they may already own from DSLRs, or even Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras. And the PL model will let customers work with professional cinema lenses from Zeiss, Arri and Cooke without needing an adapter. Pyxis models can shoot in all standard resolutions and frame rates, from HD up to DCI 4K, 6K, 8K and even 12K. A built-in LCD offers more than just status readings. It's also a four-inch, high-resolution HDR touchscreen that's well suited for monitoring and reviewing shots on-set. Blackmagic Design's Pyxis Monitor ($325) is a five-inch HDR touchscreen monitor with full camera control that can be mounted almost anywhere. It provides the same controls and over- lays as that camera's built in LCD, and helps out when rigging or accessories block the internal display. Blackmagic Pyxis records in Blackmagic Raw to pre- serve control of detail, expo- sure and color during post production. It also records HD H.264 proxies in realtime, making it easy to share media around the world in minutes. SONY LAUNCHES FE 50-150MM F2 GM TELEPHOTO ZOOM LENS SAN DIEGO, CA — Sony Electronics (https://electronics.sony.com) has intro- duced the FE 50-150mm F2 GM (SEL50150GM), a new telephoto zoom lens with a maximum focal length of 150mm and F2 aperture. This lens features a standard focal length of 50mm at the wide-angle end and combines a con- stant aperture of F2 with high resolution comparable to that of a prime lens. This allows for a wide range of scenarios with just one lens for various situa- tions and subjects. The FE 50-150MM F2 GM is part of Sony's G Master series and offers a combi- nation of high resolution and stunning bokeh, enhancing the imaging results for professionals using the Sony Alpha camera system. The G Master's internal opti- cal design plays a crucial role in producing its image quality. By integrating two XA (extreme aspherical) elements, two Super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements, and three ED elements, the lens effectively suppresses aberrations, en- suring sharp, high-contrast imagery across the entire zoom range. Additionally, the floating focusing system enables a minimum focusing distance of 0.4m at the wide end and a maximum magnification of 0.20 for detailed shooting. Sony's proprietary Nano AR Coating II is applied uniformly across the entire lens surface, significantly reducing ghosting and flare, even in backlit condi- tions. The lens measures approximately 7.7/8 inches (200 mm) in length and weighs approximately 47.3 ounces. It is well suited for both handheld and gimbal use, with an internal zoom design that maintains the lens' length and weight balance despite focal length changes. Equipped with four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors and Sony's ad- vanced control algorithms, the FE 50-150MM F2 GM delivers fast, accurate and quiet autofocus. This high-performance AF system is compatible with Sony's Alpha 9 III, supporting continuous shooting at up to 120fps with full AF/AE tracking. Designed with filmmakers in mind, the FE 50-150MM F2 GM mini- mizes focus breathing and is compatible with Sony's Breathing Compensation feature on select Alpha cameras. The FE 50-150MM F2 GM is now available for approximately $3,899. It's being sold directly through Sony and at a variety of Sony-authorized dealers throughout North America.
