MOTIONPICTUREC O S T U M E R S .O R G 5 From Pin to Pen From Pin to Pen They Did It with Their Clothes On spices up old Hollywood scenes Sex was hinted at but never seen." In the book, films are recounted by their romantic storyline and iconic scenes that immortalize their classy and subtle portrayal of sex in cinema. Dozens of films such as Casablanca, Some Like It Hot, and Spartacus are featured in Culver's book; along with production photos and information on the studios and creatives— including Costume Designers— involved in making the films. For those interested in watching classic Hollywood films, this book serves as a guide for which films have steamy romance and seduction that you won't be embarrassed to watch with your family. Culver is currently writing a book on Costume Designer Yvonne Wood, and he has previously written The Murder, She Wrote Cookbook (in collaboration with Nancy Goodman Iland), a collection of recipes from the cast and crew of Murder, She Wrote. Proceeds from that book went to benefit AIDS research. Both books can be found on Amazon or ordered at your friendly local bookstore. In June of 2024, retired Local 705 Costumer Tom Culver released They Did It with Their Clothes On, his book about films from the 1930s to the 1960s and how the sex scenes were implied to the audience rather than exhibited. After growing up in South Dakota and graduating high school at 16, Culver moved to California at age 20 to serve briefly in the Navy and then worked at Arthur Murray's Dance Studio in the Bay Area. Two years later, he moved to Hollywood to work odd jobs and, through a neighbor, met Tommy Welch, a Costumer who offered to help him break into the industry. B O O K S By Erin Wenrick "Tommy took me to see Jim Leech, the man in charge of hiring at Western Costume. He put me at the top of the list of interested men wanting a job. Jim Leech told me to call him every Monday morning to check on any available openings. One morning about six months later, I called and learned that someone had left to take a job on a production. I started that next Monday at 8 a.m. I made many friends and contacts during my time at Western. I worked there nearly five years until I left to begin work on Love Boat as a Set Costumer." Culver also worked as a Set Costumer on Mobsters, Town & Country and Murder, She Wrote. "I was always a movie fan, so it worked out great. Watching the stars at a local movie theater in South Dakota drove me west. Imagine getting to work with some of those screen legends on Love Boat." With a foreword written by Costume Designer Jaqueline SaintAnne, They Did It with Their Clothes On is an anthology of Hollywood's greatest romance and seduction scenes in cinema. Culver tells us, "A couple would kiss and then the camera would pan over to a fluttering curtain or a coffee pot boiling over. Next scene, the couple would appear, she is wearing his pajama top, and he is wearing a robe!
