28 SUMMER 2025 they had what they needed so we could fit and get photos boarded for the Costume Designer to approve. I was also making sure all those pre-fit looks and racks of extra wardrobe were loaded onto the BG trailer and set up at location so that we could dress BG on the day. It's a lot of logistics and coordination and meetings, and I loved every minute of it." As BG Key, Stivers had to help create the surrounding world of the show as background characters were becoming the focus of the show. "It was a show about people who are ignored and invisible, out of focus to those with main character energy. So, it was large number-wise and large emotionally. I felt a tremendous amount of responsibility to make sure that the residents of Chinatown felt like real people, that this was a believable community, and that the reality of the show was supported by the work we were doing, even if it was out of focus. We had a major success with the Jade Ladies. They were the real estate team for Bey Chan (played by the legendary Lauren Tom). We dressed them in a rainbow of jewel tone '90s skirt suits. Everyone was so obsessed with them; they wrote them into two more episodes!" Stivers tells us that the amount of work that went to the background actors of the show was not expected by production and led to an interesting problem of space for the department. "The most significant challenge on Interior Chinatown was fighting with production for my lile slice of the crew to exist. For a show about background, they were certainly not prepared for what that would mean financially or physically for the show. I mentioned before that they didn't even have a BG Key budgeted in as a regular crew member, even though there were 400 BG on the schedule for the pilot. We never had a permanent space to live. Our stock racks were moved three or four times across the Fox lot due to production trying to save money on the space. The first time Left to Right: Costumers Cesha Ventre, CD Tamsin Costello, Alyssa Tull, and ACD Laura Wong.
