2 SUMMER 2025 EDITOR'S LETTER EDITOR'S LETTER Dear Readers, Welcome to our new issue of The Costumer Quarterly! We are delighted to once again be showcasing the incredible work and lives of Motion Picture Costumers. In this issue, we explore a lile bit of our alternative side. While our Costumers work to make other people look good, sometimes we indulge in our own creative pursuits related to costumes. Many of us are more comfortable behind the camera rather than in front of it, or backstage rather than on stage. But some of us find joy in the spotlight, and in this issue we're excited to take a peek into the world of burlesque, drag, circus, and variety acts performed by our members. The world of burlesque and live performance has always been intricately tied to the expression of marginalized groups. As a union made up mostly of women, people of color, and LGBTQIA+ folks, we're familiar with marginalization and finding ways to express ourselves outside of the mainstream. This article gives a fun look at the way our members step in to the other side of entertainment. The earliest use of adornment was not for protection or modesty, but to express individuality, cultural ties, and station. Our member spotlight looks at the world of kimono and one member's journey exploring an ancient cultural tradition. The link between clothing and culture is a cornerstone of costuming, and traditional dress has always carried deep meaning for both those who witness it and those who wear it. Costume is culture and culture is costume. In our production profiles this issue, a meta theme has emerged. The three productions we are profiling, MaXXXine, Interior Chinatown, and The Studio are not just produced by the entertainment industry but are set in it. MaXXXine explores horror and mystery through the world of an actress making her way from adult films to mainstream movies. Interior Chinatown takes the meta of television and examines the harmful racial stereotypes that are an unfortunate part of our history in film and television. And The Studio takes a satirical look at the industry itself, giving you a glimpse of the ridiculous situations we find ourselves in as part of this world. We hope this issue gives you an insider's view into our lives and industry, and the occasionally bizarre and beautiful world we inhabit. In solidarity, Adam M.
