D U N E P R O P H E C Y | P E R S P E C T I V E 9 1 During my initial meetings with the studio, we had discussed at what point in our formative years we had discovered Dune. Mine was in college when my brain had started to realize that the difference between a political science or art history lecture weren't so different. I could absorb the complexity and detail of Dune…or at least begin, too. I had mentioned to the showrunner that I picked up a copy of Sisterhood of Dune at the Duck Soup in Bradley on my way to prepping for the meeting. I was immediately met with "Well, that's a good book, but you've really got to start with the trilogy, Legend of Dune, and then read Sisterhood as part of the second trilogy Great Schools of Dune, including, Mentats and then Navigators of Dune. Six books, some five thousand odd pages!—I am not a fast reader. I often struggle to keep my imagination from leading me off to a dream and then backtracking to reread. Sometimes productions take a minute to get going and green lights are not always directly following a meeting. I took every minute of the time afforded to get a scratch and head start into the material. Before the call awarding the show to my care is finished, I am texting my longtime collaborator and researcher, Haley Hughes. I had already been speaking with her as the process had started to indicate that it might close in my direction. Research, in this context, is not optional—it is the cornerstone of authenticity. The following is a paraphrase of the ensuing call: Tom: "Hi Haley, so we got the show." Haley: "I've already picked up the first book." This is a moment to reflect and comment on how good it is to develop and grow your creative relationships over shows and years. I've said so many times with all my heart and believe have even written it here in PERSPECTIVE: One architect does not build a city. I am so grateful to Haley and so many of the team who jump in with both feet whenever we get a show. A. WALLACH IX SPACEPORT.
