vehicles, street vendors, greens, scenic work, building signage, camera angles and a small bit of set extension work in post. A true herculean effort by Graphic Designers Chelsea Alden, Lorie Wallick and the scenic crew, led by Juan Hernandez. Muriel and Lee's journey from the cozy comforts of her deceased mother's farmhouse in Kansas, to the cramped quarters of a boarding house in downtown San Diego are emblematic of the sacrifices one has to make in pursuit of the American dream. Again, working within our limited means and shooting days, we decided on a location at the Disney Ranch for the farmhouse and their backlot for Muriel's job at the downtown San Diego Heyday Cafe. Both locations had the bones needed for us to then adjust with more period- and story-specific scenic, greens, graphic and dressing choices. The boarding house was a built set within a building at RSI. We needed to feel the sacrifice and struggle Muriel and Lee were making at this point in their journey. It was also the space where Muriel begins to reckon with the cracks she sees in the facade of her life. I knew I would only be able to mimic and reflect her mood with the specificity allowed by constructing the storied walls of this room.
