case. Moving forward in the series, it was important to establish a truly derelict part of the city that was ripe for the reemergence of Kingpin. Underworld Throughout the season, the series slowly exposes a lurking dark subterranean world. Foreshadowing the dark side of what is to come for NYC as Mayor Fisk consolidates power. Always just below the surface. Fisk is slipping into Kingpin and Matt is falling back into his vigilante ways. Building the underground setting for the character Muse was one of my absolute favorite sets. Scripted as an unused and forgotten subway tunnel, I wanted it to feel less grounded in reality than the rest of the show. Familiar but at the same time unhinged and unsettling. German expressionism, like Dr. Caligari and the original Nosferatu, seemed like a perfect way to go. The result was an architecturally impossible subterranean artist's garret where Muse could create his masterpieces in blood. No angle makes sense, but somehow, this is exactly right. David Mack, the famous comic illustrator who created some of the most iconic Daredevil comics, and I collaborated on the haunting Muse mural imagery. He also channeled Muse to create all of his lair artwork. Of course, working with the Art Directors, Set Designers, Illustrators, GFX, set decoration team, carpenters, painters…the exceptional talents across the board was what made it all look so perfect.
