M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 13 anyone using Pro Tools Ultimate can easily work in Atmos on almost any rig. The internal renderer removes all the complicated routing that used to come with setting up a rig to work in Atmos. Now, Pro Tools automatically routes all beds and objects to your available outputs without changing any of your routing. This lets you switch back-and-forth between working on headphones on your laptop and back to an HDX rig with an external renderer. When you are working on headphones, you can switch between listening to a 2.0 downmix and a binaural render of your Atmos mix. If you are monitoring in 7.1.4, you can monitor in your native speaker array or any other mix width in real time. While the internal renderer lacks the loudness meter of the Dolby Atmos Renderer, the are setting up a room for Theatrical Atmos, you will need to contact Dolby to arrange for certification and use of a Theatrical Renderer. The other thing the Internal Dolby Atmos Renderer does, it makes it easier than ever for students to learn how to work in Atmos. In addition to my professional work, I am also the Audio Area Head at the University of Texas at Austin's department of radio, television and film. We are an Avid Learning Partner. We recently upgraded our audio teaching lab to Silicon iMacs and Pro Tools Ultimate. Students can now mix natively in Atmos in the classroom on headphones and bring their mixes down to one of our Atmos mix suites for their final mixes. If you have been thinking about moving into the world of Atmos, now is the time. Internal Renderer does let you create a real-time loudness re- render path that you can then route to an aux track and use with your loudness meter of choice in Pro Tools. When you are done with your mix, you can use the Internal Renderer to export an Atmos ADM WAV and any re-renders you may need (5.1, stereo, binaural, stems). So, what can't the Internal Renderer do? It cannot create a Home Theatre Atmos DAMF or an MP4 with a Dolby Digital Plus render of your mix. You will need to purchase the Dolby Atmos to do that. If you have speaker configurations larger than Pro Tools' current max width of 9.1.6, you will also need to use the Dolby Atmos Renderer (which supports up to a max of 22 speakers for home theater).
