The caves and ladder were meant to replicate the look of the Phoenix Mines location we shot in Colorado. The caves, in addition to the drawings (and model), required a lot of hand waving by Art Director Kevin Lang and myself. The cave was meant to be very claustrophobic for the scene when they were cornered. George wanted the characters to feel hopelessly trapped as the reapers' feelers crept into the space and examined them. We used all the reference photos we had from the Phoenix Mines and the samples we brought from Colorado helped our painters match the colors and values. Elevation was an incredible adventure for me. Working in the Rockies was a joy, and I loved meeting so many new people. Although Elevation did get a theatrical release, I only wish it had received more exposure—it came and went too quickly. But if you missed it, you can still stream it on Prime. Mahalo!
