Café de Paris The Café de Paris club in London stayed open during the Blitz. Londoners thought they were safe there as the club was located several stories below ground—they thought the bombing couldn't reach them. Steve wanted to show the disaster in a pre- and-post way. As with the rest of the film, he was less interested in dramatic moments of battle and much more focused on the effects of this terrible war on all segments of society. The first challenge was to design a space that could be shown in a long running shot, twisting and rolling through both the stage and dance floor but also circling back and showing the kitchen staff and workers making the place run. We did this while trying to stay true to the original oval footprint— we matched the original size of the club and pulled as many authentic details as possible from archive photographs. Anna Pinnock went all-out here, and the surfaces were as rich as possible, right down to the gold leaf coves from Clare Holland's scenic team. Ultimately though, the place is destroyed. F.
