ary Pickford was "America's Sweetheart," and the
biggest star of the silent film era at the dawn of the
motion picture industry. Her golden ringlets, doe eyes
and sweet, innocent roles belied an astute businesswoman who
was moved to use her influence to help struggling actors and
aging film stars in a transient, unpredictable and ever-evolving
industry.
"We see a need, and we fill it!" she declared.
In 1921, Pickford led the founding of the Motion Picture Relief
Fund, and more than a century later, the Motion Picture &
Television Fund (MPTF) remains driven by its mission to care for
its above- and below-the-line production family. The organization
has grown from a simple donation box to a driving force for
improving the quality of life for the entertainment community
and their families with over a century of charitable care.
