M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 43 hysterically, and said, "It's going in the movie!" SL: It's such a great performance. Having him do things like the little "Sieg Heil" salute he does was just perfect. The only thing that gives it away, that it's a person, is the little "uh-oh!" when he sees the bad guy. MM: That's something I've been putting in every film. That's my "Wilhelm Scream," just so you know. I've been putting "uh-ohs" in movies since 1976! SL: Well, I'm getting ahead of ourselves … but I called you on that in Good Night Oppy! MM: SL: Because that made me laugh! And I think I was the only one in the screening room laughing at that! MM: No one else has caught that! I'm so glad that you caught that. SL: We'll get to that. I definitely want to talk about that. Because you were able to use all the existing sounds of the real rover to make a "voice," and it was brilliant. But… MM: …Back to Frank Welker! SL: …Yes please. MM: Because I remembered all these voices he used to do, I remembered that he also did a rat voice. And in that session, we zoomed down to the scene where the ark is in the cargo hold of the ship, and you see a rat in the foreground writhing in pain. And I said, "Frank, can you do that?" And that's Frank's vocal effects as well. SL: He also did the guard dogs howling in the desert that you hear outside when they're questioning Marion. MM: That's right! I forgot about that. He's just amazing. SL: I think he's somewhat retired now…? MM: No! He's still working. And we just talked about this—there's a new Gremlins cartoon coming out… SL: Right! Is he doing it? MM: He is NOT. And that's what we talked about. We were both a bit let down that there was no contact whatsoever. But I guess this is a "reboot" or something. We felt that we were an important part of … the feel of the original Gremlins. SL: That's too bad. But let's talk about the film. You wrangled all Mark won Oscars in 2016 for Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and in 2022 for Dune: Part One (2021), as well as the BAFTA for Best Sound for Dune: Part One.
