kooky." The exterior of the academy was chosen after an extensive search through Romania and Transylvania, finally settling on Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni. It had several unique qualities. First, it had a strong central turret that had a degree of similarity to the original Addams Family house, and it had enough scale to feel like a campus but by a strange quirk of its layout it also had lots of space to allow the production to extend and bend the building to our own designs. Once we had removed all the gift shops and outdoor restaurants, we had clear defining lines that allowed for extensive CG top-ups without changing the existing footprint. The enormous Nevermore gates were built in a forest close to the studio. For the remaining interiors, the show used several locations with extensive build work incorporated into them. The library was built in an empty office building with all the shelves built on wheels so they could be moved around and create different spaces to make it feel bigger than it was. Principal Weems' study was built into a location at Palatul Monteoru. The interior had this fantastic dark, almost rococo appearance, which gave a great jumping-off point for the look. Along with its dark plumb red fabric walls and heavy wood and gold moldings, the Art Department introduced an extremely eclectic theme to the space. The crew built a huge Gothic gorgon fireplace into an existing door opening and then dressed it with a mix of very traditional drapes and furnishing, but also Modernist and Brutalist elements. All this to give a feel that reflected the mixture of characters within the school. We wanted it to feel a very imposing commanding space. Even with the huge windows at one end, the light barely gets in, giving it a very mysterious feeling, reminiscent of a Victorian parlour. As a nod to the '60s TV show, we even sourced a taxidermy bear from the Natural History Museum which rounded the room out nicely! For Miss Thornhill's conservatory, the production used a location at the botanical gardens in Bucharest. We transplanted many of the existing plants within and built a subfloor to bridge over all the borders and low walls. The remaining large trees were retained with all the desks being designed and built to fit around them and reflect the shape of the room. We then dressed in a selection of more A.
