so the crew built the crow's nest on a platform above the casino floor. Thankfully, the closed event space had enough empty rooms to also create a second casino floor, the interior employees' entrance and locker room, Sterling Jr.'s office and reception area. Another location was found fifty miles away in Ellenville, NY, to film the hotel hallways, stairwell and the non-descript hotel room Charlie jumps out of. The plate spinning continued with building the presidential suite and balcony on the Umbra stage while prepping Charlie's trailer interior and interior of Natalie's house. Piecing together several separate locations to seamlessly present a single-scripted location on the screen was like solving an intricate 3D puzzle while navigating time and availability constraints. It was not unusual to simultaneously scout several locations for three to four different upcoming episodes. Charlie's trailer was the find of the century from picture vehicle coordinator Pete Dancy. After giving him research of older style trailers to explore, he initially sent photos of lightly aged, older trailers with very little personality. I requested to find something more unique and unexpected. A few days later, I received an early text with a photo of a dilapidated trailer, missing the back wheels, stuck in a muddy ditch. What I also noticed was the unique color combination with a beautiful patina on a 1950s trailer with a mostly preserved wood interior. It was perfect for Charlie and I was convinced we wouldn't find anything better. After towing it to the stage and seeing its true condition, the carpenters went to work cleaning, replacing and improving it to a slightly more believable condition of habitability. A section of the wall was removed for camera coverage and then reinstalled to be transported out west for the exterior scenes in Nevada. Aside from Charlie's barracuda, this is the only character space we see for Charlie for the remainder of the season. Episode Nine: "Escape from Shit Mountain" - Colorado "Escape from Shit Mountain" features the Deerfield Motel and Lodge, one of the earliest set builds at Umbra stages to match the exterior motel location D.
