As the crew rolled right into season three without a break, we quickly became masters of turning one set into another. The USS Stargazer was quickly transformed into the USS Titan, and everything else in our scene-dock was trucked out to the Blue Cloud Movie Ranch to be turned into the dark underbelly of the Federation "District 6." Art Director Kit Stølen headed up the District 6 project, taking bits from old sets, and reconfiguring them into an alien marketplace where the characters would hunt for bad guys in a Blade Runner-inspired menagerie. Our goal was to create interesting shapes and pathways so that the area would feel like a massive marketplace. Each stall was themed out by set decorator Shauna Aronson and her team to feel specific to a particular alien race, complete with authentic Star Trek alien languages and details. Luckily, Graphic Artists Geoffrey Mandel and Alan Kobayashi had been creating Star Trek's strange new worlds for decades and knew the various iconographies. Back at the studio, Art Director Liz Kloczkowski worked with the concept and Set Design teams to expand the sets of the USS Titan. What normally would have taken months to develop, now had to be done in weeks. We needed a transporter room, a sick bay, crew quarters, and a whole bunch of corridors…and, and, and.
