Kirk's era. Here the production aimed to capture the essence of the Star Trek period. By infusing the chateau with elements reminiscent of that time, a visual connection to the broader Star Trek universe was fostered, enhancing the story's depth and authenticity. In this period, the solarium's glass becomes the canvas for Picard's mother to paint a mural, portraying her growing depression. Teek van thi Mach's stunning mural, with an ethereal stained-glass window effect, added a profound layer to the story and set the stage for the powerful scenes that followed. In the year 2024, the chateau had been abandoned since World War II, which created a haunting atmosphere. The story's time travelers arrived to the familiar location to find it dilapidated. Drawing inspiration from urban explorer photographs, the Art Department aimed to depict the natural decay and overgrowth that would befall a structure left untouched for eighty years. From wood rot to rampant vegetation, every detail contributed to the ambiance of a genuinely haunted house. Working with Set Designers Steve Saylor and James Addink, we created sets of circular hallways and interconnected spaces that allowed us to shoot the same room from multiple angles, which played a crucial role in the intense chase scenes that unfolded within its walls; creating an illusion of a larger space and intensifying the thrilling pursuit. To accommodate the chateau's transition across different time periods, the design team aimed to "paint with a bigger brush." We created elements that allowed us to boldly transform the set from one era to another and back again. We introduced removable panels that could be replaced, large wooden beams that could be added or taken away, and large swaths of overgrowth, symbolizing the passage of time. The grand library within the chateau underwent a significant evolution throughout the season. Alternate walls were created, enabling quick changes for different time periods.
