www.postmagazine.com 2 POST MAR/APR 2023 EDITOR'S NOTE his issue went to print just prior to the annual NAB Show, which returns to Las Vegas to cele- brate its 100 th anni- versary serving the broadcast industry. The organization was founded in 1923 as the National Association of Radio Broadcasters, and then the National Association of Television and Radio Broadcasters before finally taking on its current name — the National Association of Broadcasters — in 1958. This will be my 29 th NAB (31 st if not for the COVID cancellations in 2020 and 2021), and I always look forward to seeing the new technology and trends that are affecting the production and post production of content. "Remote Workflows" and "Virtual Production" are two trends with increasing momentum, and we're anticipating lots of news in both areas at this year's show. COVID certainly drove the need to work remotely, and manufacturers have been responding with tools that enable seamless collaboration among talent located throughout the globe. On page 24, we report on some of the latest tools that are empowering remote workflows, and we'll be adding to our coverage on our website in the coming weeks. Virtual production has also gained steam, and it's not just the highest-end facilities that are taking advantage of its benefits. Shows like Disney+'s The Mandalorian have been using virtual production techniques and LED volumes for several seasons, but did you know the technology is being adopted by the likes of schools, such as the University of Florida for their Gators sports programming (pictured) and recruiting? In our "Virtual Production" coverage on page 26, you can learn how companies such as Vū are partnering with businesses and institutions such as UF to add these capabilities. Turning to our cover story, I had the chance to speak one-on-one with director Chad Stahelski about his continued work on the John Wick franchise. Stahelski co-directed the first release in 2014, and then served as the sole director on 2017's John Wick: Chapter 2 and 2019's John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. He shared with Post the excitement and oppor- tunities that the world of John Wick offers, and even recalled his history with the series' star, Keanu Reeves, which dates back to The Matrix films, in which he served as Reeves' stunt double. At press time, John Wick: Chapter 4 had taken in more than $250M worldwide for Lionsgate. Stahelski shares his vision, beginning on page 14. Another highlight in this issue is Iain Blair's interview with Dexter Fletcher, who shares his experience directing the new Apple TV+ feature Ghosted, starring Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. The project was a change of pace for Fletcher, whose recent feature work includes the musical biopics Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman. On page 10, he talks about the film he set out to make, which combines both practical and digital VFX. My colleague Kendra Ruczak also shares a feature on DreamWorks Animation's Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which was nominated for an Academy Award in the "Best Animated Feature" category. The film comes 11 years after the original Puss in Boots, and 18 years after the title character made his debut in Shrek 2. DreamWorks Animation's VFX supervisor Mark Edwards reveals how the animation evolved for this latest release, as well as the technology. Check it out, beginning on page 18. Of course, keep an eye on our website – postmagazine.com – for exclusive content and news coming out of this year's NAB Show.
