Your creative and technical achievements continue to amaze and inspire us, and it is an honor to share your stories with our audience. This issue's cover story spotlights DreamWorks Animations' Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which received Oscar, BAFTA, and Annie Award nominations for Best Animated Feature. Ar- riving 11 years aer the original, this new installment takes the visual style of its fairy tale world in an exciting new direction with fully redesigned characters and environments. With vast improvements in technology since Puss in Boots' last cinematic outing, the design team had greater creative freedom and fewer limitations. Eighteen years ago, when the feline adventurer made his debut in Shrek 2, he quickly removed his cape and tossed it off screen. Although the cape fit his heroic persona, there was a strategic reason behind its removal: capes were too tricky to animate using the tools available at the time. With an arsenal of new animation tools now available, the team was able to add the cape back to his ensemble. This issue also explores the immersive VFX behind Netflix's critically-acclaimed All Quiet on the Western Front, which received nine total Oscar nominations including Best Visual Effects. As the film portrays the horrors of World War I, it was vital for VFX supervisor Frank Petzold to deliver effects that emphasized historical accuracy and photorealism. Extensive 3D scanning and modeling allowed Petzold to re-create historical elements with the highest levels of accuracy. This included scanning the actual train car in which a historic armistice agreement was signed, along with an authentic French Saint-Chamond tank — the first tank design to ever be used in warfare. Also in this issue, we go inside the immersive animation workflow for Eternal Spring, Canada's official Oscar submission for Best International Feature. The documentary is presented from the perspective of Daxiong, an acclaimed comic artist whose life is deeply impacted by a heist of China's state TV airwaves. As the narrative unfolds, the artistic pro- cess behind the film's animation is also revealed. We also dive into the development of The Quarry, an immersive survival-horror game featuring photorealistic performances by a star-studded ensemble cast. Inspired by slash- er films, the game features over 180 possible endings and a script exceeding 1,000 pages. Developer Supermassive Games collaborated with Oscar-winning VFX studio Digital Do- main to deliver the game's nuanced performances. With the 100 th Annual NAB Show just around the corner, this issue also features industry insights on workstations and storage solutions, highlights the evolution of facial animation, and explores the importance of motion in the metaverse. DreamWorks animator Maarten Lemmens wraps with the issue by sharing career ad- vice: "Build yourself up with everyone else around you, even if it's your college peers. They're not your competition — they're the friends and connections you have made that might help you in the future. It is a small industry!" ¢ W R E C E N T A W A R D S E D I T O R I A L CGW MANAGING EDITOR Kendra Ruczak kruczak@cgw.com t: 818.291.1168 POST EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Marc Loftus mloftus@postmagazine.com t: 516.376.1087 PUBLISHER/PRESIDENT/CEO William R.
