Music as Decor Throughout the pandemic years ACD, and now CD, Gypsy Taylor has moved around the globe a lot, to say the least. Her workspace has traversed the globe by her side. For this reason, the scope has downsized from a packed-to-the-gills studio space into a tiny suitcase with lovely essentials. Apart from the hardware and international adaptors, a must have element that fuels her is music. Taylor always carries a blue- tooth speaker with a soundtrack to set the tone. Ella and Louis is always the first album to help settle into a workspace. Music always inspires her design process and gets her in the mindset of whatever project she is working on. Currently, Taylor is designing some new romantic pirates, so she has Heart and The Psychedelic Furs on loop. The traveling work- space also includes a Windsor & Newton watercolor set, cher- ished watercolor brushes, Japanese pens from her favorite bookstore in the world, and 3B Staedtler pencils all cared for in a roll out fabric case gifted to her in Cyprus. Taylor always keeps close by her side a tiny, stripy, caterpillar that her mum crocheted, which holds an affirmation that only she knows to keep her safe wherever she lands. Currently in Auckland, New Zealand, her desk features a local native plant next to her globe-trotting paraphernalia. Taylor wonders, "Who knows where my lile kit wil end up next?" 82 THE COSTUME DESIGNER | WINTER 2023
