A Not-So-Basic Basement CD Keri Smith cheerily reflects on her space in the 10th season of The Goldbergs, "Hard to believe this basement box was ever empty Season 1. Every costumer on this show through the years has learned one major rule; don't throw anything out. We have curated bins of foam, cardboard, shapes, and things. I have pulled sphere-shaped Styrofoam out of the trash and joking- ly uttered, 'How dare you? Who is fired here?' You never know what the writers will come up with, so they may need a home- made '80s cardboard costume or a cooky Beverly sweater in an hour. So here we are now! The 10th season with an overflow of creative options crammed into what was once a bare base- ment box." Inspiration is pinned or taped or dangling wherever the eye or head knocks into. Add a googly eye or some glitter and you can turn a frown upside down. Since this has been Smith's domain for so long, and it has become so personal, one favorite accessory that everyone knows as a sweater clip is cheekily deemed the 'bitch clip.' Smith expounds, "For some reason I called them that back in the '80s and '90s. The bitch clip cinches in the waist of any ole garment in a pinch while looking decorative and purposeful. We keep them on set racks and costumers keep emergency ones in their kit bag. There is a stash in our craft room. 'Just throw a bitch clip on her,' I like to say." When visitors and costumers from other shows come by they can not help but smile and lean into her world. Smith charmingly closes, "Our space sets a tone of joy even on the most stressful days where the project seems impossible. Some days we don't even miss windows." Inspiration is pinned or taped or dangling wherever te eye or head knocks into. 78 THE COSTUME DESIGNER | WINTER 2023
