22 • THE ARTISAN WINTER 2023 CRAFT EDUCATION Make-Up Craft Education Classes: Brushes On September 11, 2022, we hosted our third Make- Up Craft Education event at Local 80. We were thrilled to welcome back The Powder Group to announce their trade show was returning to Los Angeles after a four-year hiatus; with free admission to all Local 706 members. Presentations and demos included MAC Cosmetics and their pro educator John Stapleton discussing long-wear products, Lit Cosmetics discussing and demoing their glitter products and different adhesives, Saint Jane Beauty discussing their CBD skincare and make- up products, and fellow 706 make-up artist and multi-award winner Ve Neill sharing make-up brush techniques. Artist and Cubism pioneer Pablo Picasso is attributed with saying, "Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist." Our Local 706 make-up artists have continued to be pioneers in technique and technology, and have created some of pop culture's most beloved and villainous characters for the stage and screen. With more than 120 credits to her name, our own Ve Neill is exactly one of these artists. In the 1990s, Ve originally designed her make-up brush line to equip every artist to create any beauty, character or special effects make-up. Her brushes uniquely carried the name on each handle to inspire the artist to use it for what the brush was designed for. With her updated make-up brush line, Ve felt switching most of her designs to synthetic hair allowed her brand to remain modern, on-trend and more affordable than natural hair brushes. Since their original inception, technology with brush manufacturers have made many advancements with engineered synthetic fibers that work really well to emulate natural fibers in natural hair brushes, holding and dispersing products really well. Some of these newer brushes that Ve has added have been inspired over the years by fellow artisans and how they themselves use their brushes; creating texture for the face and body, creative body make- ups and for trauma/FX make-ups. When I asked Ve what this brush was designed for, she said, "Yes, smash it against a table to spread the bristles to give you a cool stipple effect." While this brush does not exist in the updated and current line, Ve has created more brushes with this intention and in more sizes with the dual fiber bristle brushes now titled Texture 1 through 5 brushes. "You can still smash them and splay the brush bristles to create your own unique pattern. In the updated line, you have round and flat top dual fiber brushes, and if you smash them and play with them, you will see how they create different patterns."
