THE ARTISAN WINTER 2023 • 21 CRAFT EDUCATION Hair Craft Education: Wigs & Hair Can you believe our hair craft classes? On July 17, we had another opportunity to gain knowledge. Our willingness to share with each other and learn new skills is a cornerstone of what keeps Local 706 members thriving and creating. Our class was hosted at Local 80 in Burbank. The open size of the room allows us to be COVID- compliant while still having room for 100 members. Our hardworking volunteers supported us and the Tech Committee was indispensable. Deepest gratitude to you all. Local 706 treasurer, journeyman Gail Ryan, showed us tricks to help make our wig wrap a success. Gail is one of the most creative, knowledgeable, and generous artists in our Local. Using tools we all have in our kit, she gave us examples about how to wrap the hair to make a shapely head underneath, apply a wig cap with a part. Extraordinary 706 journeyman Natascha Ladek was up next schooling us in wig care. She shared her expertise in caring and maintaining the integrity of our valuable wigs. Natascha spoke about how to properly clean and keep your wigs and lace in top condition. We learned what type of block she prefers and how to shape your block to fit your specific wig. She demonstrated ways to pin a wig even if the lace is too short to block. Both Gail and Natascha took numerous questions and graciously spoke to members after the demonstration as well. Schwarzkopf shared extensive information about their wonderful Fibre Clinic Line using human hair, as well as synthetic wig examples of product results. We can't say enough about this line. It will bring your wigs and extensions back to life by plumping the hair with moisture. Imagine what it can do for your client's hair! Dyson presented their line of professional tools and attachments. They showed us how to use the new B Y J A N I K L E I N B A R D & B R E N D A B L A T T Corrale flat iron to create looks from croquignole curls to beachy waves and sleek straight. This iron cane used cord-free and is easy to bring to set. The supersonic hair dryer has magnetic attachments that are super easy to use. We are loving the flyaway attachment. Dyson offers a large professional discount with a special code for Local 706 members! On September 11, Local 80 once again hosted our craft class, where our knowledgeable members educated us and answered questions. It is always exciting to see this exchange of ideas and experience, and the gallery also participated by sharing some of their own know-how. Our first guest artist was the exceptional Local 706 journeyman Kimi Messina. Kimi showed us her tools and her technique for sewing hair into a stunning style that won't fall under the most rigorous activity. A presentation by TRUHAIR was next during which we learned about their unique temporary color products from root concealer to color-reviving mousse. We're certain 706 stylists will find numerous ways to use TRUHAIR products. Trichologist and Local 706 asset Dr. Kari (Williams) took the stage next. As an expert in supporting our clients with hair loss, alopecia, eczema, dry scalp, and more, Dr. Kari spoke about solutions for common scalp issues and products, as well as answering questions. R+Co shared the benefits of their award-winning line of products. Members learned how to use the products for hair/scalp health and for styling. We also learned that R+Co products are vegan, heat and UV-protective and cruelty-free. Everyone went home with generously donated goodie bags and many with fabulous raffle prizes. Special thanks to Local 80 and all our inspirational speakers! We love your social media posts as always. Looking forward to Hair Craft Education in 2023!
