D AY S H I F T | P E R S P E C T I V E 8 9 the right director who could bring the deft balance of grounded, hard-hitting action mixed with the tongue-and-cheek lighthearted comedy it needed. JJ and Tyler then worked together on the script, developing big action beats until it caught the attention of Chad Stahelski, Jason Spitz and their 87eleven Productions. Chad brought in Shay Hattan to polish the script and with the backing of Netflix, their global exposure gave life to this compelling world of vampire hunters. The story follows a hardworking, blue-collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted 8-year-old daughter. His mundane Valley pool cleaning job acts as a front for his real source of incomeā€¦that is to say, hunting and killing vampires. Starting with the initial microcosm of the Valley, the goal was to ground this comedy with not just realistic action but to capture the gritty underworld environments of the vampire sub-culture juxtaposed against a Men in Black society of union vampire hunters. Quietly, they have been protecting the good citizens of the San Fernando Valley, operating out of their subterranean 1960s Masonic lodge parked under the Round-Up Dry Cleaners on Roscoe Boulevard. As production weighed the cost of filming the Los Angeles look in Los Angeles, it became clear that Atlanta would become our home base. LA would become a unit anchored at the end of the schedule where we would capture the quintessential look of the Valley. So, as production began in January of 2021, I scoured and scrubbed the greater Los Angeles area for the many necessary looks needed to build the contemporary world of Day Shift. B. MAYAN TEMPLE.
