Lawrence of Arabia is a 1962 epic historical drama film based on the life of T.E. Lawrence. The film depicts Lawrence's (Peter O'Toole) experiences in the Arabian Peninsula during World War I, in particular, his attacks on Aqaba and Damascus, including his involvement in the Arab National Council. The Production Designer was John Box who is also known for Doctor Zhivago (65), Oliver! (68) and The Great Gatsby (74). Box, although born in London, spent much of his childhood in Sri Lanka. He graduated from the London School of Architecture and served with the Royal Armoured Corps during WWII. John Stoll, also lived and worked in London, is credited as Art Director. Some other things Stoll is known for is: The Invisible Man (TV series 58-59), Master of the Game (TV miniseries 84), Firepower (79), Living Free (72) and Creatures the World Forgot (71). The production for Lawrence of Arabia was having problems filming in Jordan due to outbreaks of illness and rising cost. It was Box who got behind moving the production to Spain, which is where they finished filming. One of the many tricks Box performed to get the nickname "the magician." It is widely considered one of the greatest and most influential films in the history of cinema. The film won seven Oscars at the 35th Academy Awards in 1963: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography (Color), Best Art Direction (Color), Best Film Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
