etc.—reinforcing that Chickie's world has been upended. Inwood is brick and stone, gray-green with Irish Catholic motifs. Saigon is martial and dense with higher contrast whites, blues, flag yellows and reds, and multi-lingual graphics. Rural areas and the military are a riot of foliage greens, drab earth tones, muddy waters and iron-red soils. Within this framework, different materials and methods create distinct settings, especially the military bases. The design scheme also guides location scouting —identifying the type and relative importance of settings, gauging the scale of action, identifying sites to build on, noting day or night scenes, FX and stunt requirements. It can all be found there. Locations Shooting at such far-flung locations naturally provided starkly different environments. To maximize them, the production favored exteriors or made interior sets on locations, in fact, the entire film was shot without building a stage set. We had very little cover, but in return, we captured the essence of both countries. However, there were still plenty of scouting and production challenges. Some main "Inwood" locations were missing, and prep had to be organized from Thailand (it was like tacking a '60s pilot on to the shoot). In Bangkok, the Art Department had to find period Saigon amid many incongruities; the alphabet, the distinctive Thai shrines and Crown properties, left-hand driving, and a 7-11 store on every corner were obvious trouble that we overcame with careful shot- planning, masking, culturally appropriate dressing and VFX. The military scenes required airports and aircraft, paddies, jungles and remote mountains, that were elusive until pandemic restrictions eased.
