Right out the gate, I brought in Graphic Designer Alex Maziekien and let her brain twirl for the logo and Victory branding. Alex Maziekien: "Since DWD is a period film, the root of all graphics started out in research to find style and color references. [For the Victory logo], we wanted something that made you feel "watched"—with a mysterious stylish flair to it." Much of the graphic impulse came from the Bauhaus school, notably typefaces by Herbert Bayer and color block imagery by Anni and Josef Albers. Alex and I imagined strong and unified graphic themes. Functionalism and Russian Suprematism fit alongside atomic design and desert modernism. The Town The design of the town commenced early because of the timeline required to create the miniature. Olivia imagined this community as a spiral of cul-de- sacs with Frank's house in the center. I asked Art Director Mary Florence Brown, who oversaw the miniature, to speak on its design. Mary Florence Brown: "Frank has the luxury of walkability within the center of town. The people of Victory don't have that luxury. They have the trolley and are restricted by the path it must follow. In the center of town there is a theater, the Dollhouse, a fitness center, a giant shopping center with a ton of parking spaces. Obviously, only the men can drive, and the overwhelming amount of parking really speaks to a 1950s sense of utopia." On Booksmart, the Art Department integrated meditation to access deeper realms of imagination. At first, we used it as a way to loosen up, but It worked to disarm us and brought so much inspiration that we continue to use the practice: Mary Florence Brown: "One of my favorite days was when we laid on the floor and astral traveled to the town of Victory to imagine what it would feel like to walk down the promenade and see the palms overhead, hear the fountains and imagine what else the town needed. I don't feel like we would have conceived the entire design without A A. PROMOTIONAL POSTERS FOR VICTORY FEATURED IN FRANK'S POOL HOUSE. GRAPHIC BY ALEX MAZIEKIEN. B.
