M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S I 33 is one of our most mysterious and elusive aspects of our medium." Would you please elaborate? RH: Well, I think because sound, a little bit like music, is so easily underestimated in terms of its value, and it operates on an almost subliminal level many times for audiences. When it's right, it adds so much to the atmosphere. It can strengthen your psychological understanding of a character, and it certainly can create suspense. It can create a sense of romance, and again, it works even more on the audience's subconscious than music, because you're really not thinking about what the sound is, you're just taking it for granted the way you do in everyday life. And yet, because the sound design team and the post team have been able to create this other feeling, it's incredibly valuable and important. SS: What you are saying is that if the sound was missing, it would matter, it would make you notice it if the sound was missing?! RH: Yes, we would notice it if it was missing, and sometimes you notice it, like we do in life, and if it's distinctive, it can be very unsettling, it can be very attractive. It communicates with us in this nonverbal way that is incredibly potent because it's also very universal in the way that it reaches people from all corners of the planet. SS: Excellent! You also said, "Sound, both literal and impressionistic, worlds are built, and audiences are immersed." Please tell us more. Mr. Ron Howard 2022 MPSE Filmmaker Award
