30 I M PS E . O R G Gung Ho. The mixer was a legend. His abilities to do dialogue mixing was phenomenal and Tommy Fleischman worked under him and he learned a lot from him. His name was Dick Vorisek. Dick really didn't care about sound effects. I shouldn't say that cold. But his focus was dialogue. And he had a close co-mixer with him who was a young guy who's just starting out who was completely and totally intimidated by Dick. So he was very timid in the sounds. The sounds were barely heard. And here we are in a factory making cars, the metal press thing, all sorts of stuff, welding, and I mean, it was just a cacophony of stuff, which we did in a way that did not affect the dialogue. But it needed to be there. And I would get incensed, and it turned out that both Dan and Mike would get a kick out of my antics. And then one day, I get called into the narration booth, which was Ron's office. He was behind a glass booth, and he was constantly on the phone. And he calls me in and he says, "Chic, I just want you to know..." And it's the way he talks on Happy Days and on Andy Griffith, that's how he is, he's just a genuinely sincere, nice guy. He hires people that play the heavies, so that he doesn't have to, so you can love this guy all the time. And when you like somebody, you want to do more for them. You bend over backward to help. He said, "I just want you to know, I love how everything is sounding. You got to stop being intense because you're getting everybody all worked up." For him to tell me this was like, I was getting, you know, knocked down. And I said, "Jesus, Ron, I'm sorry. We just work so hard." He says, "Oh, I know! Believe me. If something is out of line for me, I'll let them know. But, it's good. I'm very happy with what's going on." So I stopped immediately, I stopped my antics. He put me in my place. SS: I mentioned Ron Howard is getting the Golden Reel Filmmaker of the Year Award for his contribution of sounds in his storytelling. I've worked with you on three Ron Howard features, The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, and Frost/Nixon. It was a privilege to work with you on such high-profile movies. I also worked with you on Rocky Balboa. I've never felt more proud than working on these films with you. CC: That's how I feel with the crews I had, working with you was great. Meeting you back in New York, when you were in New York City, the whole thing that you did by volunteering and helping people at Ground Zero. What a selfless thing to do. SS: Thank you. CC: Really, and I love your way. I mean, you're very informal, in a formal sort of way, especially with the boa, but it was a pleasure working with you. I get asked all the time from my friends that aren't in the business, "Don't you miss it?" I say the only thing I miss are the people that I worked with. The jobs that I completed, I'm glad that I did them, to be part of it, but I'm done. I have no regrets whatsoever. I'm happy about that. I worked 43 years in the industry. I don't have 43 years of life left. So I
